How to Choose the Right CBD Product

CBD products are rapidly growing in popularity. With significant benefits available over the counter – and far fewer legal hurdles in acquisition than medical marijuana – as well as strong ease of use, individuals from all walks of life are considering CBD opportunities.

However, as the U.S. market is still largely unregulated with no true benchmarks in place to evaluate or categorize CBD opportunities, finding the right product can be a challenge. Those new to CBD may find the market overwhelming, leading to hesitation in making a purchase. This is what you need to know about choosing the best CBD products for you.

The Benefits of CBD

Effects and Targets of CBDCBD, which stands for cannabidiol, is a cannabinoid found in marijuana plants in moderate quantities. Unlike THC, CBD does not adhere to cannabinoid 1 receptors in the brain and nervous system and thus does not cause the intoxicating side effects for which marijuana is known. For some, this may sound like a disadvantage, but for those who want the benefits of marijuana without the high, it’s a significant plus.

CBD is associated with numerous medical conditions with avid users claiming significant and widespread benefits that can address conditions and effects like:

  • Pain
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Seizures and tremors
  • Insomnia
  • ADD and ADHD
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Cancer side effects
  • PTSD
  • Arthritis
  • Headaches and migraines

For this reason, many people are eager to embrace CBD as a potential non-pharmaceutical alternative.

Kinds of CBD Products

Common Forms of CBDCBD is available in numerous different forms, all of which have individual pros and cons. Before making the decision to use CBD, it’s important to understand all of the possibilities in order to determine which one is best for your unique needs. The most common include:

CBD oil, or oil extracted directly from a hemp plant, is the most popular form of CBD product on the market. Usually, CBD oil is consumed by place drops under the tongue to be absorbed by the mucous membranes within the mouth. This allows for quick penetration, allowing users to reap near-immediate benefits.

CBD Capsules and Gummies

For those who don’t care for oil, CBD oil also comes in pill form. These capsules can be swallowed like any other pill and will be absorbed within the digestive tract. For those who want an experience similar to consuming candy forms of edibles, CBD gummies are also an option.

CBD Sprays

CBD spray is similar to CBD oil but is available in a concentrated spray form. For those who aren’t comfortable with oils or don’t like the taste, a spray can be sprayed into the mouth and swallowed.

CBD Vape Juice

CBD vape juice is designed for vaping, or smoking using a vaping device. These liquids are mixed with CBD oil, providing a way to inhale CBD into the lungs, where it can then be absorbed into the body.

There are other, less common CBD products, like shampoos and lotions. However, these options are more niche in nature and, due to the lack of ingestion, can result in minimal exposure.

The Legality of CBD

While there are no federal laws on the books regarding using or buying CBD products as there are marijuana, provided it is under .3% THC, but some jurisdictions have their own ideas. In Virginia, for example, CBD products are only legal with a prescription.

The selling of CBD is also a little complicated. The FDA has banned the sale of unapproved CBD products – which, in theory, is all of them, outside of the single FDA-approved medication, Epidiolex – but is enforcing this policy with warning letters rather than fines or legal consequences. In some states, like Ohio and Texas, law enforcement agencies have raided retail locations based on local or municipal laws.

Before purchasing CBD products, be sure you are clear on the laws in your area.

Choosing Positive Products

As there is no one regulatory body that oversees CBD products – and the FDA is no help on this front – it’s important as a user to understand what you are purchasing. There is no industry standard as to how to package or present information, so you need to know the signs to look for.

In general, reputable sellers will provide significant information regarding their products, including:

  • Potency
  • The origin of the hemp used in processing, including where it was grown, under what conditions, and the extraction process
  • Testing for any toxins, like heavy metals and pesticides
  • Lab results for a product’s particular batch

Companies that obscure information are likely untrustworthy, or at minimum, can be a risky choice due to the unknown information about production and origin. Whenever possible, pick options that are as transparent as possible.

In many ways, CBD products are a matter of personal preference. Oils, sprays, and capsules all work in very similar ways, providing many of the same benefits regardless of method of ingestion. Whether you are new to CBD and want to stick with tried and true oils or would prefer to experiment, there are plenty of options available for everyone. By choosing reliable brands backed by other users and review sites, you can find the right CBD product for any ailment – no matter what you’re up against.
